Social work is one of the oldest helping professions in the world. It has evolved over time, with changes in the world and society.

  • The profession of social work has a long history, dating back to the 19th century.
  • It began in England as a response to the industrial revolution, when poverty and crime increased dramatically.
  • In 1839, the first charitable organization, called the Charitable Society for the Relief of Poor Widows with Small Children, was founded. This organization focused on alleviating the poverty of widows and their children.
  • In the United States, the profession of social work began in the late 19th century, with the formation of the Charity Organization Society in New York City. This organization focused on providing services to the poor and needy.
  • In the early 20th century, the profession of social work began to expand and evolve. Social Workers began to focus on providing counseling and therapy services, as well as advocating for social justice and equality.
  • Today, Social Workers provide a wide range of services, from case management and advocacy to mental health services and community organizing.

Social Work Month is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the profound impact that Social Workers have on our society. It is a time to appreciate the hard work and dedication of social workers, and to thank them for all they do.
